Turkey looks into Google’s payment practices within Play Store
"An investigation has been opened about GOOGLE in order to determine whether GOOGLE violated the Act no 4054 on the Protection of Competition (the Act no 4054) according to article 41 of the same Act," the authority said in a statement.
The probe will examine allegations that Google breached competition rules by requiring app developers distributing applications on the Play Store to use its own payment system, Google Play Billing (GPB), while preventing developers from notifying users about alternative payment options.
The decision follows a preliminary review conducted as part of the "Mobile Ecosystems Industry Review," which raised concerns that Google was restricting payment services for developers. The initial findings indicated that the company mandates the use of GPB for in-app purchases and bars developers from promoting other payment methods.
Based on these findings, the Competition Authority has decided to proceed with a full investigation.
The authority emphasized that opening an investigation does not imply that the company has violated the law or will face sanctions.
