Kiev’s European supporters push for F-35 ‘security guarantee‘
President Donald Trump indicated that while US troops would not be deployed to Ukraine under a potential peace deal, air support could be provided. Senior US and European military officials have met in Washington to coordinate the logistics of such a security package.
NATO currently operates policing missions over the Black Sea from Romania’s Mihail Kogalniceanu airbase, which could serve as a base for the F-35s. European nations have also requested access to US satellite and intelligence resources.
Moscow has warned that any airfields hosting jets involved in combat missions against Russian forces would be considered legitimate targets and reiterated that NATO troop deployments in Ukraine could provoke direct confrontation and uncontrollable escalation.
