Clark Roofing Brings an Operations-First Approach to Complex Commercial Roofing in Central Texas

Repair work at the Temple Public Library and Central Texas Regional Airport are two examples of the standards the company applies to commercial buildings.

Its work rebuilding two Temple landmarks after the May 2024 tornado, the six-story public library and a large canopy at the Central Texas Regional Airport, shows the operations-first standards the company applies to commercial roofing across the region.

When the tornado tore through Temple with sustained winds of 125 to 145 mph, it damaged buildings across the area. At the library, hail punched through both the outer skylight and the interior skylight over the building's atrium. At the airport, an aluminum canopy engineered to withstand 100 mph winds was destroyed, and Aluminum Composite Column Panels were all destroyed and were scattered across the airfield.

For the library, Clark Roofing installed an 80 mil, hail-rated TPO membrane, a step above the 60 mil system commonly used on commercial buildings, and fully adhered it to the concrete deck to resist wind uplift. The upgrade carries a 30-year service life. Crews fabricated a new skylight roughly 60 by 18 feet in place over the open roof, six stories above the library floor, and completed the reroof in about nine days while the building stayed open to students and the public.

At the Central Texas Regional Airport, the company rebuilt a canopy approximately 60 feet tall and 350 by 300 feet, working a few feet from a live runway under FAA lighting and perimeter rules. Teams walked the work area by hand each day to clear any debris that could be drawn into a jet engine, and installed specialized radius column panels and a soffit system carried on six to eight week material lead times.

"We make sure every material is on site before we start, and we don't buy as we go, so a job that size can still be watertight the same night we work it," said Mike Anderson, General Manager of Clark Roofing. "On the library we recommended the 80 mil over the standard 60 mil because it's rated to protect that building for 30 years, including the next round of hail this part of Texas is going to see. Property owners here should be able to count on a roof that's built for the storm that's coming, not just the one that already hit."
