How Thick Should Garage Gym Flooring Be? What 55,000 UK Home Gyms Chose

Data from Britain's largest online rubber gym flooring retailer shows 20mm is the standard for garage gyms

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, UNITED KINGDOM, September 2, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The most common question asked by people converting a garage into a gym is how thick the rubber flooring needs to be. Purchase data from more than 55,000 UK home gym installations points to a clear answer: 20 millimetres for most, and thicker only for specific training styles.

Sprung Gym Flooring, the Glasgow-based online retailer that supplied those installations, reports that the 20mm rubber tile is the most chosen thickness across its home gym customer base since 2020. The company's guidance, published this week in its buyer's guide, is that thickness should be decided by impact rather than load.

"The question that matters is not how much you lift but what you drop," said Richard McKay, founder of Sprung Gym Flooring. "A 20mm rubber tile over concrete handles dumbbells, kettlebells and a rack set down hard. If you regularly drop a loaded barbell from the hip or overhead, you move to 30 millimetres. Forty millimetres and above is for Olympic lifting, dedicated platforms, and rooms above living space."

The company's published thickness guidance is as follows: 15mm suits cardio equipment and dumbbells up to around 30kg set down under control; 20mm suits general strength training and protects concrete from dropped dumbbells; 30mm suits heavy deadlifts and dropped bars and reduces noise further; 40mm and above suits Olympic lifting and commercial free-weight zones.

At UK list prices in September 2026, plain black 20mm rubber tiles cost between roughly £23 and £35 per square metre across the main sellers, with basic rubber matting from around £22 and coloured EPDM tiles from around £45. A typical single garage requires 13 to 18 square metres of coverage.

Sprung Gym Flooring is the trading name of Marcias Limited (Companies House SC653753), founded in Glasgow in 2020. The company has floored more than 55,000 UK home gyms, carries more than 1,900 customer reviews, and publishes its full company facts, product specifications and thickness guidance at gym-flooring.com.
